UK:
Tesco is getting onboard with the finest in the
UK’s seafood catching sector by sponsoring
boats to enter the Responsible Fishing Scheme (RFS).
The supermarket is committed towards sourcing from
Responsibly Managed Fisheries as part of its sustainable
fisheries strategy and will match the £25,000
awarded by industry authority body, Seafish, to
help finance the assessment of about 150 catching
vessels.
The Responsible Fishing Scheme was launched by Seafish
in 2006 to promote good operational and environmental
practices. Developed to raise standards and demonstrate
the seafood supply chain's commitment to responsible
sourcing, the scheme has already certified over
200 boats and a further 300 are in the process of
assessment. As a result, more than 41% of the UK
fleet is now involved in the initiative and other
fishing nations such as Holland are very close to
adopting the scheme for their own fleet.

USA fly casting guru Mel Krieger passes away
The Mel Krieger School of Fly Fishing has introduced
thousands of new participants to the sport, backed
up by Mel's instructional videos and articles.
He was also well known for his DVD called "Mel
Krieger's Patagonia" which leant on his years
of experience visiting and fishing the area.
In his own words he "took up fly fishing with
a vengance" in 1964 following a move to San
Francisco, getting involved in the casting tournament
scene centred there. He ended up teaching and fishing
all over the world and was involved with introducing
the 'Flycasting Certification Program' endorsed
by the Federation of Fly Fishers in the USA.
Australia:
Mercury and MotorGuide proud sponsors of the 2008
MotorGuide BASS Electric Series.
Anglers - both expert and amateur - have received
thousands of dollars in cold, hard cash as well
as a clutch of MotorGuide trolling motors, thanks
to Mercury and MotorGuide’s sponsorship of
Australia’s two leading fishing competitions.
The 2008 MotorGuide BASS Electric Series has had
a fantastic finish, with more than 50 of the best
Bass fishermen in the country competing for the
final honours of the season. After two fog-shrouded
days on Bjelke Petersen Dam in Queensland’s
Burnett Valley, Jesper Noiesen wrote his name in
the ABT records book with a combined weight total
across the two angling session giving him the champion’s
crown for 2008. Jesper claimed victory in the first
of the two angling sessions, with his 3.48kg bag
earning him a Blue Fin Boats 345 Trekker with MotorGuide
electric rig. Similar boat and MotorGuide motor
packages were won by Paul Kneller, for the second
angling session, and Bundaberg basser Chris Horne,
who claimed his in a random draw. The anglers at
Burnett Valley had earned their places there via
the 23 qualifying rounds across the year
